What we actually do when your fridge stops cooling

A refrigerator only has one job, and when it stops doing it the clock starts running on everything inside. Most people's first instinct is to assume the worst — a dead compressor, a fridge that needs replacing. In reality, the majority of the cooling failures we attend across Gauteng come down to a handful of components that cost a fraction of a new appliance: a failed thermostat, a seized evaporator fan, a defrost element that has stopped clearing ice off the coils, or a start relay that has given up on an otherwise healthy compressor.

Fridge repairs we carry out most often

• Compressor and start relay faults. A compressor that clicks and stops is frequently a R800 relay, not a R4,600 compressor. We establish which before quoting.
• Thermostat and temperature sensor failure. The cause of both "not cooling at all" and "freezing everything" — the two complaints that sound opposite but often share a root.
• Evaporator and condenser fan motors. A fridge with a dead evaporator fan will cool in the freezer and stay warm in the fridge. Very common on frost-free models.
• Defrost system faults. Heater element, defrost thermostat or timer. Symptom: a thick wall of ice at the back of the freezer and a fridge section that gradually stops cooling.
• Gas leaks and regassing. Leak traced and repaired first, then a correctly weighed charge of R600a or R134a. Never a top-up on an unrepaired leak.
• Water leaks and blocked defrost drains. The puddle under the salad drawer is nearly always a blocked drain tube, and it is one of the cheapest repairs we do.
• Door seals and hinges. A perished seal makes the compressor run permanently, which quietly doubles your electricity bill long before the fridge fails outright.
• Inverter boards and PCBs. On modern Samsung, LG and Hisense units, a cooling failure is increasingly an electronics fault rather than a mechanical one.
