Fridge Repairs in Gauteng — Diagnosed Properly, Fixed Once
A fridge that has stopped cooling is not a job that can wait until next week. We prioritise cooling failures, arrive with the parts that fix most of them, and tell you honestly if the appliance is beyond economic repair.
What we actually do when your fridge stops cooling
A refrigerator only has one job, and when it stops doing it the clock starts running on everything inside. Most people's first instinct is to assume the worst — a dead compressor, a fridge that needs replacing. In reality, the majority of the cooling failures we attend across Gauteng come down to a handful of components that cost a fraction of a new appliance: a failed thermostat, a seized evaporator fan, a defrost element that has stopped clearing ice off the coils, or a start relay that has given up on an otherwise healthy compressor.
The difficulty is that all of these faults present identically from the outside. The fridge is warm. The light works. Something inside might be humming. Guessing from the symptom is how people end up paying for a part they never needed, which is why our technicians test rather than assume: power at the compressor, continuity through the thermostat, airflow across the evaporator, temperature differential across the coils, and system pressure where a refrigerant loss is suspected.
That diagnosis is what you are booking. What follows it — the repair itself — only happens once you have seen the price in writing and agreed to it.
Fridge repairs we carry out most often
Some faults come up week after week. These are the ones our vans are stocked for, which is why they are usually resolved on the first visit rather than turning into a two-appointment job.
- Compressor and start relay faults. A compressor that clicks and stops is frequently a R800 relay, not a R4,600 compressor. We establish which before quoting.
- Thermostat and temperature sensor failure. The cause of both "not cooling at all" and "freezing everything" — the two complaints that sound opposite but often share a root.
- Evaporator and condenser fan motors. A fridge with a dead evaporator fan will cool in the freezer and stay warm in the fridge. Very common on frost-free models.
- Defrost system faults. Heater element, defrost thermostat or timer. Symptom: a thick wall of ice at the back of the freezer and a fridge section that gradually stops cooling.
- Gas leaks and regassing. Leak traced and repaired first, then a correctly weighed charge of R600a or R134a. Never a top-up on an unrepaired leak.
- Water leaks and blocked defrost drains. The puddle under the salad drawer is nearly always a blocked drain tube, and it is one of the cheapest repairs we do.
- Door seals and hinges. A perished seal makes the compressor run permanently, which quietly doubles your electricity bill long before the fridge fails outright.
- Inverter boards and PCBs. On modern Samsung, LG and Hisense units, a cooling failure is increasingly an electronics fault rather than a mechanical one.
If your fridge is doing something not on this list, that does not mean it is unusual — it means it is worth a phone call. Describe the symptom to us and we will tell you what it most likely is.
Why customers choose Best Appliances for fridge repairs
Cooling work rewards experience more than almost any other appliance repair. Sealed systems are unforgiving: charge a system with the wrong quantity of refrigerant and it will run, badly, for a few weeks and then fail. Miss a leak and the customer is calling you back in a month. Our technicians work on fridges every day, which is the only real way to build that judgement.
Alongside the technical side, there are the practical things that make a repair painless: a genuine appointment window rather than a vague day, a written quote before anything is dismantled, and a straight answer when an appliance is not worth the money. We would rather lose the repair and keep the customer.
Brands and fridge types we repair
We work on chest freezers, bar fridges, top-freezer and bottom-freezer combinations, side-by-side units and American-style French-door fridges with ice and water. Common brands include Samsung, LG, Defy, Bosch, Hisense, Whirlpool, Kelvinator, Siemens, AEG, Smeg, Miele and Electrolux.
The fridge faults we are called out to most
Each of these has a specific cause and a specific fix. If you recognise your fridge here, we have almost certainly repaired the same fault this week.
Fridge not cooling at all
Compressor, start relay, thermostat or a refrigerant loss. The light working tells you nothing about the cooling system — this needs testing, not guessing.
Freezer cold, fridge warm
Classic evaporator fan or defrost failure. Cold air is being made but never reaches the fridge compartment. Usually a straightforward, affordable repair.
Freezing food in the fresh food section
A thermostat or sensor telling the compressor to run when it should have stopped, or a stuck air damper on frost-free models.
Compressor running non-stop
Often a perished door seal, a dirty condenser coil or low refrigerant making the compressor work permanently to reach a temperature it will never hit.
Water pooling inside or under the fridge
Nine times out of ten it is a blocked defrost drain. Cheap to fix, and left alone it will rot the floor of the appliance.
Loud buzzing, rattling or knocking
Condenser fan, compressor mounts or a failing start relay. Noise is a warning sign — attended to early it is a small repair.
Heavy ice build-up at the back of the freezer
The defrost system has failed. Chipping the ice out is a temporary fix; the element, thermostat or timer is what needs replacing.
Error code on the display
Samsung, LG and Hisense models will name the failed sensor or board for you. Send us the code by WhatsApp and we will tell you what it means.
How a fridge repair actually runs
Four steps, no surprises, and a decision point that belongs to you rather than to us.
You describe the symptom
Call or WhatsApp. Tell us whether the freezer is still cold, whether you can hear the compressor, and send a photo of the model plate inside the door.
Priority booking
Cooling failures are triaged ahead of non-urgent work because your food is on a clock. You get a confirmed time window and the call-out fee upfront.
Test, diagnose, quote
Electrical testing on the compressor circuit, thermostat and fans; pressure testing where a gas loss is suspected. Then a written price — parts, labour, total.
Repair and verify
We fit the part, restart the system and confirm the fridge is genuinely pulling down to temperature before we leave. We do not call it fixed because it hums.
Fridge faults we put right every week
Compressors, thermostats, defrost systems, gas leaks and door seals — diagnosed on site and repaired in your kitchen wherever it is safe to do so.

Fridge repair FAQs
The questions Gauteng homeowners ask us most about fridge and freezer repairs.
My fridge is not cooling but the light comes on. What does that mean?
It means the appliance has power, so the fault is almost never the plug or the wall socket. The cooling side of a fridge is a separate system: compressor, evaporator fan, thermostat or temperature sensor, defrost circuit and refrigerant. A light that works simply tells us the electricity is arriving; it says nothing about whether the compressor is running or the gas is still in the system. This is the single most common call we take, and it is the reason our technicians arrive with compressor relays, thermostats and fan motors already on the van.
How much does a fridge repair cost in South Africa?
Most fridge repairs land between R750 and R2,900 including parts and labour, with compressor replacements sitting higher at roughly R2,500 to R6,300. The variables are the part, the brand and how much dismantling the model requires. Our fridge repair cost guide breaks it down fault by fault so you can see where your problem likely sits before you book.
Is it worth regassing a fridge, or is that throwing money away?
It is worth it only if the technician finds and repairs the leak first. Refrigerant is a sealed system — it does not get 'used up'. If your fridge is low on gas, it leaked out somewhere, and simply topping it up means you will be back in the same position within months. We pressure-test and trace the leak before we regas, and if the leak is in an unrepairable part of the sealed system we will tell you the fridge is finished rather than take your money twice.
Why is my fridge freezing the food in the fresh food compartment?
Usually a failed thermostat or temperature sensor that is telling the compressor to keep running long after the fridge has reached temperature. On frost-free models it can also be a damper or air-flow control that is stuck open, dumping freezer air into the fridge section. Either way it is a repairable fault and typically an inexpensive one — it is not a sign that the fridge is dying.
How long will the repair take?
Most fridge repairs are completed on site in 45 to 90 minutes once the fault is confirmed. Compressor replacements and sealed-system work take longer — often two to three hours — because the system has to be evacuated, the new component fitted, and the correct refrigerant charge weighed in. If we need to order a model-specific part, we will tell you the wait upfront.
Do you repair American-style, side-by-side and double-door fridges?
Yes. Side-by-side and French-door models from Samsung, LG, Hisense and Whirlpool are a large part of our work. They have more to go wrong — ice makers, water dispensers, twin cooling fans, inverter boards — and they are exactly the kind of appliance where a proper diagnosis saves you from replacing an expensive unit unnecessarily.
