Dishwashers fail in a handful of predictable ways
A dishwasher is a sealed box in which hot water, detergent, food waste and grease are thrown around at pressure, several times a week, for years. Given that, they are remarkably reliable. When they do fail, the failure is almost always in one of four places: getting water in, getting water out, heating the water, or the electronics that decide when each of those should happen.
That is genuinely useful, because it means a dishwasher fault is diagnosable rather than mysterious. A machine that will not drain is a filter, a sump, a drain hose, a non-return valve or a pump — and those can be checked in order, cheapest and most likely first. A machine that will not heat is an element, a sensor or a board. A machine that leaks is a seal, a hose or a tub. Nobody needs to guess.
What we will not do is replace components speculatively until the symptom goes away. That approach turns a R900 repair into a R4,000 one and it is why people end up believing dishwashers are not worth fixing.
Dishwasher faults we repair
- Not draining — standing water in the base. Blocked filter or sump, failed drain pump, blocked non-return valve, or a drain hose that has been plumbed with a dip in it. Very common, usually inexpensive.
- Not filling, or stopping early in the cycle. Inlet valve, blocked inlet filter, low water pressure, float switch or a flood-protection device that has tripped and latched.
- Not heating — cold water, wet dishes. Heating element, NTC temperature sensor or control board. On condenser-dry models, a blocked vent or failed fan.
- Dishes coming out dirty or gritty. Blocked spray-arm jets, a seized spray-arm bearing, a failed circulation pump or a diverter valve stuck feeding only one arm.
- Leaks. Door seal, sump gasket, spray-arm feed, inlet or drain hose, or a cracked tub. The source matters enormously to the price, so identifying it properly comes first.
- Door and latch faults. Machines that will not start because the door switch is not making, or doors that drop because a spring or cable has gone.
- Control boards and error codes. Surge damage after load-shedding is a genuinely common cause of dishwasher board failure in South Africa, and it is worth knowing that before you assume the machine is simply old.
- Limescale and detergent build-up. Not a breakdown, but it degrades wash results, blocks jets and shortens element life. Sometimes the honest answer is a service rather than a repair.
What actually happens on the call-out
The technician runs the machine, watches what it does and where it stops, and tests the suspect components rather than working from the symptom alone. If the fault is a blockage or a service issue, you are told that and charged for the work done, not for a part you did not need. If a component has failed, you get the part, the labour and the total in writing before anything is opened up or ordered.
Nothing is repaired until you approve it. If the number does not make sense against the age and value of the machine, we will tell you that too — there is no version of this business that depends on talking someone into a repair they will regret.
Before you call us, two things worth trying
These are not repairs, they are the two checks that most often turn a call-out into a five-minute job you can do yourself, and we would rather you tried them.
Clean the filter properly. Not a rinse — remove the coarse filter and the fine mesh from the base of the tub, and clear the sump underneath it. A surprising proportion of “not draining” and “not cleaning” call-outs are a filter that has never been taken out since the machine was installed.
Check the spray arms turn freely and the jets are open. Lift each arm off, run water through it, and clear any blocked holes with a cocktail stick. Blocked jets are the single most common cause of dishes coming out dirty on a machine that is otherwise perfectly healthy.
If neither of those changes anything, the fault is mechanical or electrical, and that is where we come in.

Why is there always water left in the bottom of my dishwasher?
A shallow film of water in the sump is normal — it keeps the seals from drying out. Standing water above the filter is not. It usually means the drain path is blocked or the drain pump has failed. The blockage is often food debris in the filter or the sump, but it can also be a kinked or badly plumbed drain hose, or a blocked non-return valve. Clear the filter first; if the water stays, the pump or the hose is the problem and it needs opening up.
My dishes come out gritty or still dirty. Is the machine broken?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. Blocked spray-arm jets, an overloaded or badly stacked machine, exhausted rinse aid, a clogged filter or a water inlet that is not delivering enough pressure will all produce poor results without anything actually failing. Genuine faults that cause it are a failed circulation pump, a broken spray-arm bearing, a heating element that is not warming the water, or a diverter valve stuck on one arm. We check the cheap causes first and tell you honestly if the fix is a proper clean rather than a repair.
My dishwasher is not heating and everything comes out wet.
Most domestic dishwashers dry by residual heat, so if the water never gets hot the dishes never dry. The usual causes are a failed heating element, a failed NTC temperature sensor telling the board the water is already hot, or a control board fault. On condenser-dry machines a blocked vent or a failed fan can also do it. It is a testable fault, not a guess.
There is water under the kickboard. How serious is that?
Serious enough to stop using it. A leak can come from the door seal, the spray-arm feed, the sump gasket, the inlet or drain hose, or a cracked tub. Most are inexpensive; a cracked tub usually is not, and on an older machine that is the point where replacement makes more sense than repair. Switch the machine off at the wall and close the water stopcock behind it until we have looked at it, because a slow leak under a fitted kitchen does expensive damage to the cabinetry and the floor.
The display is showing an error code. Does that tell you what is wrong?
It tells us where to start, not what the answer is. Manufacturers use codes to point at a subsystem — water intake, drainage, heating, communication — and the same code can be produced by a sensor, a pump, a wiring fault or the board itself. Give us the brand, the model number and the exact code when you call and the technician will arrive with the likely parts on the van, which is usually the difference between a one-visit repair and a return trip.
Do you repair built-in dishwashers, or only freestanding ones?
Both, plus slimline 45 cm machines. Built-in units take longer because the machine has to be released from the cabinetry and drawn out to reach the pump and hoses, and integrated door panels need care on refitting. We allow for that when we quote so the price does not move at the end of the job.
Is it worth repairing an older dishwasher?
It depends on the fault and the machine. A drain pump, an inlet valve, a door seal or a heating element on a sound mid-range or premium machine is usually well worth doing. A failed main control board or a cracked tub on a budget machine that is already eight or nine years old often is not, and we will say so. You get the diagnosis and the number, and you decide — we do not push a repair that we would not pay for ourselves.
