What actually drives the price
Washing machines are not silent, but they are consistent — and it is the change that matters. If your machine has developed a noise it did not used to make, something has worn or come loose, and the type of noise tells you a great deal about what.
The one to take seriously is a grinding or roaring sound that appears on the spin cycle and gets louder as the drum speeds up. That is the drum bearings, and they do not recover. What determines whether this ends as a repair or a replacement is how long you leave it — because bearings that fail completely will destroy the drum shaft and sometimes the outer tub, and at that point the economics collapse.

What affects the final price
- What kind of noise it is. Grinding and roaring means bearings. Banging means suspension or levelling. Squealing means a belt. Rattling usually means something is trapped where it should not be.
- When the noise happens. Noise only at high spin speed points at bearings. Noise throughout the cycle points at the motor or an obstruction.
- How long it has been going on. This is the one that determines the price. Bearings caught early are a repair. Bearings ignored for six months take the drum with them.
- The machine's age and brand. A bearing job on a Bosch or Miele is a sound investment. The same job on a twelve-year-old budget machine usually is not, and we will tell you so.
When we would tell you to replace instead
There is a point at which repairing stops being thrift and starts being throwing money after a dying appliance. That point is usually reached when:
- The bearings have failed on a budget machine already past eight to ten years old.
- The bearings have been left long enough to damage the drum shaft or the outer tub.
- The drum, tub and bearings all need replacing — that is a rebuild, not a repair.
- The quote exceeds roughly half the cost of an equivalent new machine.

How long can I keep using a machine with noisy bearings?
As little time as possible. Bearings that are merely noisy can be replaced as a contained job. Bearings that are allowed to fail completely will chew into the drum shaft and, on many machines, damage the outer tub as well — and at that point you are not replacing a bearing, you are replacing most of the machine's rotating assembly. That is the difference between a repair worth doing and one that is not. If your machine has started roaring on spin, book it this week.
Why does my washing machine bang and move across the floor?
Three possibilities, in ascending order of cost. The machine is not level, which is common and free to correct. The shock absorbers or suspension springs have worn out, which is a moderate repair. Or the bearings are failing, which is the serious one. On a newly delivered machine, add a fourth: the transit bolts may never have been removed, and that will destroy the suspension in short order.
What does grinding on the spin cycle mean?
Drum bearings, in the overwhelming majority of cases. The bearings support the drum shaft, and when they degrade the metal-on-metal contact produces exactly that grinding or roaring sound — and it gets louder as the drum speeds up, which is why you hear it worst at the end of the spin. It does not improve, it does not settle, and it does not go away. It only gets more expensive.
Is a bearing repair worth doing?
It depends on the machine. On a Bosch, Siemens, Miele or AEG — appliances engineered for well over a decade of service — a bearing replacement is usually a sound investment, because the machine around the bearings has years of life left.
