Fridge Leaking Water — Repair Cost and Causes

Water pooling under the salad drawer or on your kitchen floor is, nine times out of ten, a blocked defrost drain — and that is one of the cheapest repairs in the entire trade. Here is the full list of causes and what each one costs.

Before you call anyone

What actually drives the price

A leaking fridge feels alarming and is usually trivial. Every frost-free fridge produces water as a normal part of its defrost cycle, melting the ice off the evaporator coil several times a day. That water is supposed to run down a small drain channel, through a tube, and into a shallow tray sitting on top of the compressor, where the heat evaporates it away.

When that drain blocks — with food debris, ice, or simply years of sludge — the water has nowhere to go. It backs up, freezes into a sheet under the salad drawers, and eventually overflows onto your floor. Clearing the drain solves it, and it is inexpensive. The other causes are rarer, and worth knowing about.

Typical repair costs

The prices below include the part and the work to fit it. The call-out is separate. Use them to decide whether the repair is worth booking at all.

Estimated ranges based on repairs commonly carried out across Gauteng. Parts and labour included; call-out excluded. Final pricing depends on the appliance manufacturer, model, parts required and the complexity of the repair.
RepairTypical cost (est.)What's involved
Blocked defrost drainR750 – R1,100The cause of the overwhelming majority of fridge leaks. Cleared, flushed and tested.
Cracked or dislodged drip trayR650 – R1,050The tray above the compressor has cracked or been knocked out of position.
Door seal replacementR1,050 – R2,800A poor seal lets warm, humid air in, which condenses into water inside the cabinet.
Blocked or split drain tubeR800 – R1,500Where the tube itself is damaged rather than simply blocked.
Water inlet valve (plumbed models)R1,050 – R2,100Leaks in fridges with ice makers or water dispensers usually start here.
Water line / connection leakR750 – R1,600Split supply line or a failed compression fitting behind the appliance.
Blocked defrost drain caused by a defrost faultR1,000 – R1,850Where the underlying problem is a failed defrost element allowing the coil to over-ice.
These are estimates, not quotesNo honest technician can price an appliance they have not tested. The same symptom can have a R750 cause or a R5,800 one, which is exactly why we diagnose on site and give you a firm written price before any work starts. You approve it, or you pay the call-out and we leave.

What affects the final price

  • Where the water is appearing. Inside the cabinet under the salad drawers points at the defrost drain. On the floor behind the fridge points at the drip tray or, on plumbed models, the water line.
  • Whether the fridge is plumbed in. An ice maker or water dispenser adds a whole category of possible leaks — inlet valve, supply line, fittings — that a standard fridge simply cannot have.
  • Whether there is ice under the drawers. A sheet of ice beneath the crisper drawers is essentially diagnostic of a blocked defrost drain.
  • Model access. On some models the drain is reachable in minutes. On others, particularly side-by-sides, the rear panel and evaporator cover have to come off first.

When we would tell you to replace instead

We would rather lose the booking than take payment for a repair we do not believe in. Buy a new one instead when:

  • The leak has soaked into the cabinet insulation, which will never dry out and will cause the fridge to run permanently.
  • The interior liner is cracked and water is getting into the foam behind it.
  • The leak is a symptom of a wider failure — a dead defrost system on an already old fridge, for example.
  • There is rust through the cabinet base, which means water has been sitting there for a very long time.

Weigh the quote against half the cost of buying new. Beyond that threshold, the repair is usually not worth it, and you will hear that from the technician rather than have to work it out yourself.

FAQs

Fridge Water Leak — your questions

Straight answers about pricing, before you commit to anything.

Why is there water under my salad drawers?

Your defrost drain is blocked. Every frost-free fridge melts ice off its evaporator coil several times a day and drains that water away through a small tube to a tray above the compressor, where it evaporates. When the drain blocks, the water backs up and collects in the lowest point of the cabinet — which happens to be directly beneath the crisper drawers. It is the most common fridge leak there is and one of the cheapest repairs we do.

Can I unblock the drain myself?

Sometimes. The drain hole is usually at the back of the fridge compartment at floor level, and flushing it gently with warm water can clear a soft blockage. What we would ask you not to do is push a wire or a skewer down it — the drain tube is thin-walled and easily punctured, and a puncture turns a R750 repair into a considerably larger one. If warm water does not clear it, leave it to us.

Is a leaking fridge dangerous?

Not electrically, in most cases — but it is not harmless either. Water on a kitchen floor is a slip hazard, water sitting inside the cabinet will eventually rot the base of the appliance, and moisture that finds its way into the insulation permanently degrades the fridge's efficiency. It is a cheap problem now and an expensive one if it is left for six months.

The leak is coming from behind the fridge, not inside. What now?

Look at whether your fridge is plumbed in. If it has an ice maker or a water dispenser, the water inlet valve, the supply line or a compression fitting behind the appliance are the likely culprits, and those need attention promptly — a supply line failure can put a lot of water on your floor very quickly. If the fridge is not plumbed, the drip tray above the compressor has probably cracked or been knocked out of position.
