Tumble Dryer Repairs in Gauteng — Vented, Condenser and Heat Pump
Running for two hours and the washing is still damp? Drum turning but no heat, or heat but no drum? Tumble dryers give clear signals about what has failed. We read them, test the part, quote it, and fix it.
A dryer only has three jobs, and it will tell you which one failed
Strip away the electronics and a tumble dryer does three things: it turns the drum, it makes heat, and it moves air through the load to carry moisture away. Almost every fault is a failure of one of those three, and each produces a distinct symptom.
Drum not turning, motor humming? That is the belt or the pulley. Drum turning, no warmth at all? Element, thermostat or thermal fuse. Warm but the washing is still damp after two hours? That is airflow — lint, vent, condenser or the moisture sensor. Once you know which of the three has gone, the diagnosis is a short list rather than an open question.
The one thing worth saying plainly: restricted airflow is not a minor issue. It is the leading cause of dryer breakdowns, it doubles your electricity cost per load, and it is how dryer fires start. If your machine is running long and hot, treat it as urgent rather than annoying.
Tumble dryer faults we repair
- No heat. Heating element, thermostat, thermal cut-out or thermal fuse. On many machines a fuse blows because airflow was restricted, so replacing the fuse without clearing the cause simply blows the next one.
- Drum not turning. Drive belt, tensioner or jockey pulley, drum rollers, or motor. Frequently a straightforward and worthwhile repair.
- Long drying times, clothes still damp. Blocked lint filter or vent, crushed vent hose, clogged condenser or heat-exchanger, failed blower fan, or a moisture sensor reading incorrectly.
- Overheating and cutting out mid-cycle. Thermal protection doing its job. The real fault is nearly always airflow, sometimes a thermostat.
- Noise — rumbling, grinding or squealing. Drum bearings, support rollers, jockey wheel or motor bearings. Cheaper to catch early.
- Condenser and heat pump faults. Blocked evaporators, failed condensate pumps, water in the wrong place, tanks that never fill.
- Door switches and latches. Machines that will not start, or that stop when the door is nudged.
- Control boards and error codes. Including surge damage after load-shedding, which is a genuinely common cause of appliance electronics failure in South Africa.
How we quote it
The technician runs the machine, identifies which of the three systems has failed, and tests the suspect component rather than swapping parts hopefully. You get the part, the labour and the total in writing before anything is ordered or opened up, and nothing proceeds until you approve it.
If the fault turns out to be a blocked vent or a filthy condenser rather than a failed part, we will tell you that and charge for the work done. It happens often enough that it is worth saying out loud.
The two checks worth doing before you book
Clean the lint filter and look behind it. Lint gets past the filter and builds up in the housing and the fan chamber. On a machine that has never been opened, that build-up can be substantial and it is throttling every cycle you run.
Check the vent hose or condenser unit. On a vented machine, pull the dryer out and make sure the hose is not crushed, kinked or packed solid, and that the outlet is clear. On a condenser or heat pump machine, remove the condenser block or evaporator filter and rinse it — on many machines this is a user-serviceable part that almost nobody services.
If the machine still runs long and damp after both, the fault is a component and we should look at it.
Tumble dryer repairs across Gauteng
We cover Kempton Park, Johannesburg, Pretoria, Sandton, Midrand, Centurion, Boksburg, Benoni, Germiston and Randburg, seven days a week from 07:00 to 20:00 — the full list is on our areas we serve page. We also repair washing machines, fridges and freezers and dishwashers, so if the dryer is not the only thing misbehaving, mention it when you book and we will look at both on the same visit.
Tumble dryer questions, answered plainly
What Gauteng customers ask us most often before booking a dryer call-out.
My tumble dryer runs but the clothes are still damp. What is wrong?
Either it is not producing heat, or it is producing heat but cannot get the moisture out. No heat points at the heating element, a thermostat, a thermal cut-out or the control board. Heat but no drying points at airflow — a blocked lint filter, a blocked or crushed vent hose on a vented machine, a clogged condenser or heat-exchanger on a condenser machine, or a failed moisture sensor telling the dryer the load is already dry. Airflow is the more common of the two and the cheaper to fix.
The drum is not turning but the motor sounds like it is running.
That is almost always a snapped or slipped drive belt, and it is one of the more satisfying repairs because the machine is otherwise fine. Occasionally it is a seized jockey wheel or tensioner pulley that has taken the belt with it, or worn drum rollers. The belt itself is an inexpensive part; the labour is in getting the cabinet apart.
Why does my dryer keep stopping partway through a cycle?
Usually a thermal overload cutting the machine out because it is overheating, and it overheats because the air cannot move. Clean the lint filter and check the vent hose is not crushed behind the machine. If it keeps happening after that, a thermostat or thermal fuse has likely failed, or the blower fan is obstructed. Do not keep restarting it — repeated overheating is how a lint fire starts.
My condenser dryer is filling with water or leaking on the floor.
Condenser dryers collect the moisture they pull out of the load into a tank, and pump it there. If the tank is not filling, the condensate pump has probably failed and the water is going where it should not. If it is leaking, look at the pump, the hoses, the tank seal or a blocked condenser unit forcing water back. Empty the tank, clean the condenser filter and if it persists it needs opening up.
The dryer is extremely noisy. Is it dangerous to keep using it?
Noise usually means drum bearings, drum support rollers, a worn jockey wheel or a failing motor. It is not immediately dangerous, but it does get worse and it can take other parts with it — a collapsed roller can score the drum, which turns a modest repair into an expensive one. Better to have it looked at while it is still a noise rather than a failure.
Are heat pump dryers worth repairing?
Generally yes, because they cost a great deal more to replace. They are also more complex: a sealed refrigerant circuit, a compressor and an evaporator that clogs with fine lint over time. Many heat pump “faults” are actually a blocked evaporator that has never been cleaned, which is a service rather than a repair. Where a genuine sealed-system fault exists we will tell you plainly what it costs against the value of the machine.
How often should the lint filter and vent be cleaned?
The lint filter after every load, without exception. The vent hose or condenser unit at least every few months, more often if you dry heavily or the machine lives in an enclosed space. This is not housekeeping advice for its own sake — restricted airflow is the single biggest cause of tumble dryer breakdowns, of long drying times, and of dryer fires.
Do you repair washer-dryer combination machines?
Yes. They fail as washing machines and as dryers, and the drying side of a combo has its own faults — usually the condenser channel or the fan. If yours is a combined unit, mention it when you book so the technician arrives with the right parts. You can also see our washing machine repairs page for the washing side.
Guides worth reading before you book

Book a tumble dryer technician.
Tell us what the machine is doing and when it does it — mid-cycle, at spin, only on hot washes. That single detail narrows most diagnoses before we even arrive.
- Front loaders, top loaders and washer-dryer combinations
- Bearings, pumps, door locks, seals and control boards
- Machine tested under load before we leave
Let’s get your washing dry again.
Tell us what the machine is doing and we will give you a realistic idea of the fault and the cost before anyone gets in a van.
