Washing machine repairs range from a few hundred rand for a blocked filter to well over R3,400 for a full bearing replacement. The spread is enormous, so knowing roughly where your fault sits is the difference between a sensible repair and money wasted on a dying machine.
What actually drives the price
Washing machines have a wider repair price range than almost any other appliance, and the reason is labour. Some faults are accessed in minutes — a drain pump filter, a door seal, a set of carbon brushes. Others require the machine to be stripped substantially to reach the component, and drum bearings are the classic example: the part itself is not especially expensive, but getting to it is hours of work.
That is why the same machine can present a R750 repair and a R4,400 repair depending on what has failed. The figures below cover parts and labour, excluding the call-out, and they are the ranges we actually see rather than optimistic advertising numbers.

What affects the final price
- The part versus the labour. A drain pump is cheap and quick. Bearings are moderately priced and take hours. That labour difference is what creates the wide price range.
- Front loader or top loader. They fail differently and cost differently. Top loaders bring gearbox and clutch issues; front loaders bring door seals and bearings.
- Brand and motor type. Direct-drive machines have no carbon brushes at all, so a technician quoting brushes on an LG Direct Drive has not looked at it. Premium German machines need correct-specification parts.
- Machine age. Not because old machines cost more to fix, but because they change the repair-versus-replace maths. The same R3,400 bearing job is sound on a Bosch and questionable on a twelve-year-old budget machine.
- How the machine is installed. A machine built into a kitchen unit or stacked with a dryer has to come out before it can be worked on, and that is real labour time.
When we would tell you to replace instead
Talking a customer out of a repair costs us the job and earns us the next three. So here is the honest position — you should be replacing rather than repairing when:
- The repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new machine.
- The bearings have failed on a budget machine that is already past eight to ten years old.
- The bearings were left long enough to destroy the drum shaft or the outer tub, which turns a bearing job into a near-rebuild.
- The main control board has failed on a machine whose replacement cost is low to begin with.
- The machine has an active leak into its own electronics — water and boards do not coexist for long.

Why is a bearing repair so expensive when the part is cheap?
Because you are paying for access, not for the bearing. Reaching the bearings means removing the drum, and on most front loaders that means substantially dismantling the machine — the outer tub often has to be split. It is hours of skilled labour. The bearing itself is a modest component; getting to it is the job, and that is what makes it the single most labour-intensive washing machine repair there is.
Is it worth repairing a washing machine that is 10 years old?
It depends entirely on the brand and on what has failed. A Bosch, Siemens, Miele or AEG at ten years is a mid-life appliance with years ahead of it, and repairing it is usually sound. An entry-level machine at ten years with failed bearings is a different story — the repair may cost half of what a new machine costs, and the next failure is likely already forming. My machine will not spin. What is the cheapest likely cause?
On a brushed-motor machine, worn carbon brushes — one of the cheapest repairs on the list. It is also worth eliminating the free explanations first: an overloaded drum or a badly unbalanced load will make a machine abandon its spin cycle entirely. On direct-drive machines there are no brushes, so the likely culprits become the door interlock, the motor speed sensor or the control board.
