Fridge Compressor Repair Cost — And When It Is Not Worth It
A compressor replacement runs from about R2,500 to R6,300 including refrigerant, drier and labour. But before you resign yourself to that number: in a large share of cases the compressor is perfectly healthy and the actual fault is a relay costing a fraction of it.
What actually drives the price
The compressor is the heart of a fridge, and it is also the component people are most quick to condemn. The symptom that triggers the fear is unmistakable — a hum, sometimes a click, and then nothing. The fridge is not cooling. It must be the compressor.
Very often it is not. That exact symptom is the signature of a failed start relay or overload protector: the compressor is trying to start and cannot get going. The relay costs a few hundred rand. Replacing a healthy compressor because nobody tested the relay is the most expensive avoidable mistake in fridge repair, and it happens more than it should.
Typical repair costs
These figures bundle parts and labour together and leave out the call-out. They exist so you can sanity-check a quote — your own, or somebody else's — before committing to anything.
| Repair | Typical cost (est.) | What's involved |
|---|---|---|
| Start relay / overload (the usual culprit) | R750 – R1,400 | Test this first. Always. It produces the exact symptom people blame on the compressor. |
| Compressor — small fridge / bar fridge | R2,500 – R3,700 | Includes compressor, drier, refrigerant and labour. |
| Compressor — standard fridge-freezer | R3,200 – R4,800 | Sealed system evacuated, new compressor fitted, correctly weighed recharge. |
| Compressor — side-by-side / American style | R4,000 – R6,300 | More refrigerant, more labour, more dismantling to reach the unit. |
| Inverter compressor (Samsung / LG / Hisense) | R3,700 – R6,300 | Test the inverter board first — it fails more often than the compressor it drives. |
| Inverter control board (if that is the real fault) | R1,700 – R4,000 | Substantially cheaper than the compressor, and frequently the actual problem. |
What affects the final price
- Whether it is genuinely the compressor. This is the whole question. Relay, overload and inverter board all produce compressor-like symptoms at a fraction of the cost. Testing is not optional.
- Fridge size and refrigerant volume. A bar fridge and an American-style side-by-side are not remotely the same job — more gas, more labour, more to dismantle.
- Sealed-system work. Replacing a compressor means evacuating the system, fitting a new drier, brazing joints and weighing in an exact refrigerant charge. That is skilled, time-consuming work and it is why the price sits where it does.
- The age of the fridge. It does not change the cost of the repair — it changes whether the repair is a sensible use of your money.
When we would tell you to replace instead
This is the conversation nobody in the trade wants to have and everybody should. Replacement generally makes better financial sense when:
- The fridge is over ten to twelve years old and needs a full compressor replacement.
- The compressor has failed on an entry-level fridge whose replacement cost is under about R9,200.
- The compressor failed because of a refrigerant leak that cannot itself be repaired.
- There is visible corrosion on the sealed-system pipework — fixing one leak simply moves the problem along the pipe.
If the repair is creeping past half the price of a replacement, that is your signal. We will hand you both numbers on site so the decision is genuinely yours.

Fridge Compressor Repair — your questions
Straight answers about pricing, before you commit to anything.
How do I know if my compressor is really dead?
Honestly, you do not — and neither does anyone who has not tested it. The symptoms of a failed compressor and a failed start relay are effectively identical from the outside: a hum, perhaps a click, then silence, and a fridge that is not cooling. The only way to tell them apart is to test the relay and the compressor windings electrically. Any technician who diagnoses a dead compressor without doing that is guessing with your money.
Is a fridge compressor replacement worth it?
On a newer, larger or more expensive fridge, frequently yes — replacing a compressor in a three-year-old side-by-side that cost R28,700 is obviously better than buying another one. On a ten-year-old entry-level fridge, almost never; the repair can approach half the cost of a new appliance, and the rest of the fridge is the same age as the part that just died. We will give you the numbers side by side and let you decide.
How long does a compressor replacement take?
Typically two to three hours on site. The system must be evacuated, the old compressor removed, the new one brazed in, a new filter drier fitted, the system pressure-tested for leaks and then recharged with an exactly weighed quantity of refrigerant. It is not a job that can be rushed — an incorrect charge will run badly for a few weeks and then fail.
My LG fridge compressor failed. Am I covered?
Possibly, and it is well worth checking before you spend anything. Many LG linear compressors carry an extended manufacturer warranty of up to ten years from purchase, and we have seen customers pay for a compressor they were entitled to have replaced at no cost. Give us your model and purchase date and we will tell you whether it is worth approaching LG first — see our LG repair page for more.
