A door seal replacement costs between R1,050 and R2,800 depending on the model. It sounds like a cosmetic repair. It is not — a failed seal makes the compressor run almost permanently, which costs you electricity every day and takes years off the appliance.
What actually drives the price
The door seal is the least glamorous component in your fridge and one of the most consequential. Its entire job is to hold a barrier between the cold inside and the warm kitchen outside, and when it stops doing that job properly the fridge does not fail — it just quietly starts working far harder than it should.
That is what makes a bad seal insidious. Nothing dramatic happens. The fridge still cools. But the compressor is now running most of the day instead of cycling on and off, your electricity bill creeps up, ice starts forming in places it should not, and the compressor wears out years earlier than it was designed to. It is one of the highest-return repairs available.

What affects the final price
- Model specificity. Seals are not universal. Each is moulded to a particular door, and integrated or imported models frequently need a part ordered in — we will tell you the lead time upfront.
- Whether the door is also misaligned. A dropped or sagging door will destroy a brand-new seal within months. If the hinges have gone, replacing the seal alone is a waste of money and we will say so.
- Access. A freestanding fridge is straightforward. A built-in unit has to come out of the cabinetry before the door can be worked on properly.
- Seal condition versus door condition. Sometimes the gasket is perfectly good and simply needs to be reseated or the door adjusted — a far cheaper outcome, and one we always check for first.
When we would tell you to replace instead
We say this on site more often than you might expect, and we say it plainly. There is no version of this business that survives by charging people to repair appliances that ought to be replaced. Replacement is usually the better call when:
- The door frame itself is distorted, so no seal will make contact along its full length.
- The cabinet insulation is waterlogged from months of condensation caused by the failed seal.
- The seal is failing on a fridge that is already old and has other faults developing.
- The bespoke seal for your model is no longer manufactured and no equivalent can be sourced.

How do I know if my fridge door seal has failed?
The paper test settles it. Close the door on an ordinary sheet of paper so that half of it sticks out, then pull. If the paper slides out easily, the seal is not gripping at that point. Do it at several places around the door — most seals fail in one section rather than all over. The other tells are condensation or ice forming near the door edge, a fridge that runs constantly, and a gasket that has gone hard, cracked or lost its magnetic pull.
Is it worth replacing a fridge door seal?
Almost always, and the payback is faster than people expect. A fridge with a failed seal runs its compressor for far more of the day than it should, which shows up on your electricity bill every single month and shortens the compressor's working life by years. A R1,400 seal that prevents a R4,600 compressor failure and reduces your running costs is not really a repair — it is preventative maintenance.
Can I just glue or repair the old seal?
It is a false economy. Gaskets fail because the material has hardened and lost its elasticity and its magnetic grip, and no amount of glue restores those properties. A patched seal will keep letting warm, humid air in, the compressor will keep running, and the ice will keep forming. Seals are moulded parts and they are designed to be replaced rather than repaired.
How long does the repair take?
Usually 30 to 60 minutes for a standard freestanding fridge, once we have the correct seal for the model. Built-in and integrated units take longer because the appliance has to be drawn out of the cabinetry and refitted afterwards.
