Fridge thermostat being tested during a repair call-out

How Much Does It Cost to Repair a Fridge in South Africa?

Most fridge repairs land somewhere between R750 and R2,900 all-in. Compressor work sits higher. Here is what each of the common faults realistically costs, what pushes the price up, and the point at which we would tell you to buy a new fridge instead.

Before you call anyone

What actually drives the price

The honest answer to "what will this cost?" is that it depends entirely on what has failed — and that most people fear the worst when the reality is usually far cheaper. The mental image is a dead compressor and a four-figure bill. The actual fault, in the majority of the fridges we attend across Gauteng, is a start relay, a thermostat, a fan motor or a defrost element, and all of those are modest repairs.

The figures below are the ranges we see in practice, including parts and labour but excluding the call-out. They are estimates to help you budget and to help you decide whether a repair is worth pursuing at all. They are not quotes — no honest technician can quote a fridge they have not tested.

Typical repair costs

Parts and labour are included in the figures below; the call-out fee is not. These are the ranges we actually see across Gauteng, offered as a budgeting tool rather than a quotation.

Estimated ranges based on repairs commonly carried out across Gauteng. Parts and labour included; call-out excluded. Final pricing depends on the appliance manufacturer, model, parts required and the complexity of the repair.
RepairTypical cost (est.)What's involved
Diagnostic call-outR500 – R750Travel and a full on-site diagnosis. Folded into the repair if you go ahead.
Thermostat replacementR800 – R1,600The most common fix for a fridge that is not cooling, or one that is freezing fresh food.
Start relay / overload protectorR750 – R1,400A compressor that hums and cuts out is usually this — not a dead compressor.
Evaporator or condenser fan motorR1,050 – R1,950Classic cause of a cold freezer and a warm fridge compartment.
Defrost element or defrost thermostatR1,000 – R1,850For heavy ice build-up at the back of the freezer and gradual loss of cooling.
Door seal (gasket) replacementR1,050 – R2,800Price varies widely by model. Bespoke and integrated seals sit at the top of the range.
Blocked defrost drain (water leak)R750 – R1,100One of the cheapest repairs we do, and a very common one.
Regas including leak repairR1,100 – R2,500R600a or R134a. Never done without finding and repairing the leak first.
Control board / inverter PCBR1,700 – R4,000Common after power surges on Samsung, LG and Hisense inverter models.
Compressor replacementR2,500 – R6,300Includes the compressor, refrigerant, drier and labour. The point at which age matters.
These are estimates, not quotesNo honest technician can price an appliance they have not tested. The same symptom can have a R750 cause or a R5,800 one, which is exactly why we diagnose on site and give you a firm written price before any work starts. You approve it, or you pay the call-out and we leave.

What affects the final price

  • Which part failed. This is 80% of the answer. A relay is a few hundred rand. A compressor with a full sealed-system rebuild is several thousand.
  • Brand and model. A Defy thermostat and a Miele sensor do not cost the same money. Integrated and imported models sit higher, and some parts must be ordered in.
  • How much dismantling is involved. A freestanding fridge with a rear-access compressor is quick. A built-in unit that must be drawn out of cabinetry, or a side-by-side where the evaporator is buried, takes real labour time.
  • Whether the sealed system is opened. Any repair that breaches the refrigerant circuit needs evacuation, a new drier and a correctly weighed recharge. That is what makes compressor and gas work cost more than electrical work.
  • Parts availability. Common parts are on the van. Model-specific boards and bespoke seals may need to be ordered, which we will tell you about upfront — including the lead time.

When we would tell you to replace instead

We say this on site more often than you might expect, and we say it plainly. There is no version of this business that survives by charging people to repair appliances that ought to be replaced. Replacement is usually the better call when:

  • The repair costs more than half the price of an equivalent new fridge.
  • The compressor has failed on a fridge that is already over ten to twelve years old.
  • The refrigerant leak is inside a section of the sealed system that cannot be repaired — for example, corroded evaporator tubing buried in the cabinet foam.
  • The cabinet itself is compromised: rusted through, water damage in the insulation, or a door that no longer aligns because the frame has distorted.
  • You have already had two significant repairs on the same appliance in the last two years.

The rule of thumb we work to: once a repair exceeds roughly half the price of an equivalent new appliance, replacing tends to win. We will put both numbers in front of you and let you make the call.

FAQs

Fridge Repair Cost — your questions

Straight answers about pricing, before you commit to anything.

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a fridge?

In most cases, repairing wins — and by a wide margin. A new mid-range fridge starts around R6,900 and a decent side-by-side runs well into five figures, whereas the average fridge repair sits under R2,900. The calculation only flips when the failure is a major one on an appliance that is already old: a compressor replacement on a twelve-year-old fridge, for instance, is usually money better spent on a new appliance.

Do you charge a call-out fee if I do not go ahead with the repair?

Yes, and only that. The call-out covers the technician's travel and a full diagnosis of the appliance — real testing, not a look and a guess. If you decide not to proceed, that is where it ends; it is not a deposit, and there is no pressure to continue. If you do go ahead, the diagnosis is folded into the repair cost.

Why can you not quote me over the phone?

Because the same symptom has several possible causes at very different prices. "My fridge is not cooling" could be a R750 relay or a R5,800 compressor, and anybody who names a firm figure before testing the appliance is either guessing or setting you up for a revised number at your kitchen door. We will happily give you a realistic range on the phone. We will not pretend it is a quote.

Are these prices guaranteed?

No, and we would be misleading you if we said otherwise. Every figure on this page is an estimate based on repairs we commonly carry out. The final cost depends on the diagnosis, the specific part your model requires, and how much labour the repair takes. You will get a firm written quote after the on-site assessment, and no work begins until you have approved it.
