What actually drives the price
The single most useful thing you can do before calling anyone is work out where the water is actually coming from — and more specifically, when. A machine that leaks only while filling points somewhere completely different to one that leaks only on spin. That timing is worth more to a diagnosis than any description of the puddle.
On front loaders, the door seal is the usual suspect and a fairly affordable repair. The one to be wary of is the tub seal, which sits behind the drum and requires the machine to be substantially stripped to reach — the same access problem that makes bearing replacement expensive.

What affects the final price
- When the leak happens. During fill points at hoses, the inlet valve or the detergent drawer. During wash or spin points at the door seal, the pump or the tub seal. This single observation drives the whole diagnosis.
- Where the water appears. From the door itself is a boot gasket. From underneath at the front is usually the pump or the sump hose. From the back is usually a hose or the inlet valve.
- Whether the machine is also noisy. A leaking tub seal and failing bearings very often arrive together, because the failed seal is what let water into the bearings in the first place.
- Overdosing on detergent. Genuinely a cause. Excess suds overflow the drawer and escape from the front of the machine, and it is mistaken for a leak surprisingly often.
When we would tell you to replace instead
This is the conversation nobody in the trade wants to have and everybody should. Replacement generally makes better financial sense when:
- The tub seal has failed and taken the bearings with it — two of the most labour-intensive repairs at once.
- Water has been leaking into the machine's control electronics.
- There is visible rust on the outer tub or the chassis, which means water has been escaping for a long time.
- The repair cost approaches half the price of an equivalent new machine.

Where is my washing machine leaking from?
Time it, and the answer usually presents itself. Water appearing while the machine fills points at the inlet hose, the inlet valve or the detergent drawer. Water appearing during the wash or spin points at the door seal, the pump housing or the tub seal. Water at the back is nearly always a hose. Water at the front bottom is nearly always the pump or the door seal. Tell us when it leaks rather than just that it leaks, and we can very often narrow it down before we arrive.
Can a torn door seal be repaired rather than replaced?
No, and patching one is a false economy. The boot gasket flexes on every single rotation of the drum, so any patch or adhesive repair is subjected to constant movement and will fail within weeks — usually while you are out of the house. Seals are moulded rubber parts designed to be replaced, and the replacement is not an expensive repair.
Why is my machine leaking only on the spin cycle?
Because spin is when the machine puts the system under real pressure and real motion. A small tear in the door seal that stays above the water line during a wash will be flung water at speed during a spin. A failing tub seal is also driven hardest at spin speeds. Leaks that appear only on spin are worth attending to promptly, because the tub seal is one of the possibilities and it does not improve with time.
Is a leaking washing machine dangerous?
It should not be ignored. Water and mains electricity are in close proximity inside a washing machine, and a leak that finds its way onto the control board or into the motor creates a genuine risk. If your machine is leaking and also tripping the electricity, stop using it immediately and switch it off at the wall — that combination is not something to run one more load through.
