A fridge regas typically costs between R1,100 and R2,500 including the leak repair. If someone offers to simply top up your gas without finding the leak, decline — you will be paying them again within months.
What actually drives the price
Here is the single most important thing to understand about refrigerant: a fridge does not consume it. The sealed system is exactly that — sealed. The gas circulates round and round indefinitely, and in a healthy appliance it will still be there in twenty years' time.
So if your fridge is low on gas, it did not use it up. It leaked. Somewhere in that sealed system there is a hole, and pumping fresh refrigerant into a system with a hole in it produces exactly what you would expect: a fridge that cools beautifully for a few weeks and then does not. The leak is the repair. The gas is just the consumable.

What affects the final price
- Where the leak is. A leak in accessible pipework is repairable. A leak in evaporator tubing buried in the cabinet foam very often is not, and that is the point at which the fridge has reached the end of its life.
- Which refrigerant your fridge uses. R600a and R134a are not interchangeable, and the correct one is stamped on the model plate. Charging with the wrong gas damages the system.
- System size. A bar fridge takes a fraction of the refrigerant an American-style side-by-side needs, and it takes far less labour to service.
- Whether the compressor survived. Running a fridge for months on a low charge starves the compressor of the oil circulation it depends on. Sometimes the leak is fixable but the compressor has already been damaged by it.
When we would tell you to replace instead
There is a point at which repairing stops being thrift and starts being throwing money after a dying appliance. That point is usually reached when:
- The leak is in the evaporator or in tubing buried inside the cabinet insulation, where it cannot be reached.
- There is visible corrosion along the sealed-system pipework — patching one hole simply relocates the problem.
- The compressor has been damaged by running on a low charge, and the fridge is already older than ten years.
- The total cost of leak repair, drier, regas and any compressor work exceeds half the price of a new appliance.

How often should a fridge be regassed?
Never, in a healthy appliance. This is the most persistent myth in refrigeration. A fridge is a sealed system and its refrigerant is not consumed the way petrol is — it circulates indefinitely. There is no service interval for gas. If your fridge needs regassing, that is not routine maintenance, it is a diagnosis: there is a leak, and the leak is what needs repairing.
Someone offered to just top up my gas for a few hundred rand. Should I?
No. It will work, briefly, and that is precisely what makes it such an effective way of taking your money. The gas escaped through a hole, and adding more gas does not close the hole — so within weeks or months you will be back exactly where you started, several hundred rand poorer. Any technician offering a top-up without a leak test is either cutting corners or counting on the repeat visit.
How do I know if my fridge has lost gas?
The characteristic signature is a compressor that runs continuously — or nearly so — while the fridge never gets properly cold. You may also see frost forming on only part of the evaporator coil, or hear a bubbling or hissing sound. But these symptoms overlap with several other faults, which is exactly why the answer is to pressure-test the system rather than assume.
Is R600a dangerous?
R600a is isobutane and it is flammable, which is why the quantities used in domestic fridges are very small and why the system is designed around that. It is entirely safe in normal use. What it does mean is that regassing is not a DIY job and should not be done by anyone without proper training and equipment — the risk is not in the fridge, it is in the handling.
