LG built its reputation on removing the parts that break. Direct Drive washing machines have no belt and no carbon brushes — the motor is coupled straight to the drum — which eliminates two of the most common failure points in a conventional machine. Linear compressor fridges do something similar on the cooling side. The result is an appliance that genuinely tends to run longer before it needs anything, and when it does need something, the failure is usually electronic or a bearing.
The catch is that LG's clever engineering makes correct diagnosis more important, not less. A Direct Drive machine that will not spin cannot have worn brushes, so anyone who quotes you for brushes on an LG has not looked at it. And many LG linear compressors carry a manufacturer warranty of up to ten years — we have seen customers pay for a compressor they were entitled to have replaced free. We check that before we quote.

My LG fridge is not cooling. Is the linear compressor gone?
Possibly, but do not assume it. On LG fridges, cooling failures are more commonly caused by the defrost system, an evaporator fan or the inverter/PCB — the linear compressor is one of the more durable components in the appliance. It also matters because many LG linear compressors carry a manufacturer warranty of up to ten years from purchase. We establish exactly what failed, and if it is the compressor we tell you whether you can claim it.
What does OE mean on an LG washing machine?
OE is LG's drainage error: the machine has not managed to pump the water out within its expected window. Before you book a technician, try clearing the drain pump filter behind the small flap at the bottom front of the machine, and check that the drain hose is not kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe. If the code returns after that, the drain pump or the pressure sensor is the likely fault.
Are LG Direct Drive washing machines expensive to repair?
Not as a rule. Direct Drive removes the belt and the carbon brushes — two of the most common wear items on a conventional machine — so LG machines tend to need fewer repairs over their life. When they do fail, the common items (door lock, drain pump, hall sensor) are moderately priced. The exception is drum bearings, which are labour-intensive on any front loader and are the one LG repair worth catching early.
