What actually drives the price
The first thing worth saying is that a warm fridge is not automatically a dead fridge. Most people assume the compressor has gone, because that is the expensive, terminal-sounding possibility. In practice, the compressor is one of the least likely causes of a cooling failure — it is a robust component, and it usually outlasts the things around it.
What actually fails, in rough order of frequency, is the start relay, the thermostat or temperature sensor, an evaporator fan, the defrost system, the control board, and only then the compressor itself. The good news is obvious: five of those six are moderate repairs.

What affects the final price
- Is the freezer still cold?. This one question narrows the diagnosis dramatically. A cold freezer with a warm fridge points at airflow — an evaporator fan or a defrost fault — not at the compressor or the gas.
- Can you hear the compressor running?. A compressor that hums and then cuts out within seconds is almost always a failed start relay, not a failed compressor. Silence is a different story.
- Has there been a power event recently?. Surges and load-shedding restoration are hard on inverter boards and start relays. A fridge that failed the day the power came back is telling you something.
- How old is the appliance?. Age does not change the repair price — but it changes whether the repair is worth doing, particularly if the compressor is the culprit.
When we would tell you to replace instead
Not every appliance deserves to be saved, and pretending otherwise is how repair companies lose customers permanently. We would steer you toward a new appliance when:
- The compressor has failed and the fridge is already past ten to twelve years old.
- The refrigerant is leaking from a part of the sealed system that cannot be accessed or repaired.
- The repair quote exceeds roughly half the cost of an equivalent replacement.
- The cabinet insulation is waterlogged or the door no longer seals against a distorted frame.

My fridge is not cooling but the light is on. What does that mean?
It means the appliance has power — and nothing more than that. The lamp runs on an entirely separate circuit from the cooling system, so a fridge can be fully powered and completely dead as a refrigerator. It is a useful data point only in that it rules out the plug, the socket and the fuse, which is where most people start looking. The fault is in the cooling system, and that needs testing.
The freezer is cold but the fridge is warm. Is that a cheap fix?
Usually, yes. That specific combination points to an airflow problem rather than a cooling problem: the appliance is still making cold air, it is just not getting it into the fridge compartment. The likely causes are a failed evaporator fan or a defrost system that has allowed the coil to ice over and block the airflow. Both are moderate repairs, typically in the R1,000 to R1,950 range, and neither means you need a new fridge.
How long can food last in a fridge that has stopped cooling?
Keep the doors shut and you have roughly four hours of usable refrigeration, and about 24 to 48 hours in a full freezer. The single most valuable thing you can do is stop opening it. If we cannot reach you within that window, move anything critical to a neighbour's freezer — and please do not keep switching the fridge off and on at the wall, because short-cycling a struggling compressor is one of the few things that can turn a cheap repair into an expensive one.
Should I just buy a new fridge?
Not before you know what has failed. Five of the six likely causes of a cooling failure are moderate repairs on an otherwise healthy appliance — replacing the fridge because of a R1,050 fan motor would be an expensive mistake. If the diagnosis comes back as a failed compressor on an older fridge, then yes, replacement is usually the better call, and we will tell you so plainly.
